A free massive open online course (MOOC) promoting citizen action in French speaking Africa

Citizen Connections 2Buoyed by the success of the Citizen Connections online training course (MOOC) that brought together almost 5,500 French speaking Africans in 2020, CFI, the French media development agency, is relaunching the course, this time with additional content.
In less than a decade, the explosion of online media and the growing demand for more effective public action in Africa have revealed the innovative “CivicTech” opportunities presented by citizen initiatives. Although digital tools are now readily available, the lack of a dynamic ecosystem plus insufficient knowledge are hindering the development of these projects.
In keeping with what it is doing to overcome this challenge, CFI launched the second instalment of its MOOC on Monday 11 October.
CivicTech brings together digital initiatives to support democratic practices. These initiatives are a relatively quick and cost-effective way to help more citizens get involved in public life. To gain a simpler understanding of this promising sector, CFI has produced the Citizen Connections MOOC, as a tool to raise awareness of the challenges, restrictions and possibilities presented by digital and citizen innovation.
The MOOC is part of the Citizen Connections 2 project co-funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and is for anybody who wishes to develop or use digital and citizen solutions, particularly young people and women, but also public authorities, the media and civil society organisations (CSOs).

3 months of building skills
The content provided as part of this second MOOC is entirely free and will be available from 11 October 2021 until 11 January 2022. Users will have access to 30 animated educational videos, quizzes and an online forum. Anybody who completes the entire course will receive an electronic certificate.
Once the course is complete, the most experienced people will be able to apply to the call for projects, in the hope that they will be among the 25 winners who will receive project development support.
