Yemeni journalists receive training to produce content to promote women’s rights

MakanatiIn September, the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) organised two training sessions in Ta’izz and Aden to strengthen the skills of Yemeni media outlets in covering issues associated with gender equality and women’s rights.
28 journalists from the governorates of Aden, Sana’a, Hadramaut, Ta’izz and Al Hudaydah benefited from these intensive, three-day sessions on editorial techniques, writing skills, advocacy for women’s rights, safety at work, and digital security.
The aim of this training course, organised as part of the Makanati project, was to help raise awareness of problems faced by women in Yemen, to defend their rights guaranteed by the Constitution and to bring issues concerning women to the forefront of media coverage, across all levels.

Haifa Mohammed, the local coordinator of the Makanati project in Yemen confirmed that the journalists who took part now say they are able to tackle and stand up for issues concerning women using a clear and specific methodology.
“We are really counting on the journalists who took part in the training sessions over the first and second years of the project to stand up for issues concerning women and gender equality in the media, both by producing media content and by advocating within the institutions with which they work,” she explained, following the training session.
