Three youth broadcasting projects in the Sahel region

Three youth broadcasting projects in the Sahel region

Last December, fifteen journalists from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger took part in in a regional workshop on producing programmes for young people. In February 2021, three projects were selected by CFI and the training team.

In Burkina Faso, Alain Yaméogo, from online media organisation Toute Info, wants to promote perseverance as a determining value in young people’s success with his project “Kiogo-kiogo”. Through short videos, these innovative ideas will benefit from a showcase of free expression.
These videos will be posted on the Toute Info website and their social media accounts.

In Mali, it was ‘‘Bembere grin’’ by Fatouma Harber from Bembere that was selected.
The whole Bembere team is delighted to have been picked. I think it will be a great opportunity for our team of bloggers to gain even more professionalism thanks to the training and coaching offered”, she explained when the results were announced. This programme, in the form of a grin (a chat over a cup of tea), is intended to be a showcase for young people from disadvantaged areas of Bamako and its surroundings.
By involving young people in these grins, this programme aims to provide them with an opportunity to express their opinions on various social issues. “Our aim is to produce a digital programme that is interactive and appealing to young people; a programme that fits into their daily lives and reflects their realities”, explains Fatouma Harber.

A short programme designed and run for and by young people, the show will be broadcast every fortnight on social media. For Ina, the young presenter who will be taking her first steps with this programme: “I feel very enthusiastic about the idea of using this training to improve myself and, at the same time, providing a fantastic programme for the youth of Mali”.

Entertaining and Interactive Programmes

For Niger, the ‘‘Ça pique’’ project was presented by Zakari Zongoma from Etrane TV.
This monthly magazine provides a relaxed, entertaining, musical and humorous meeting place for young Nigerien people. Interactive and fun, its three main aims are to promote talent, highlight hidden gems and introduce them to the public. A video is to be posted on social media every month.

The programme includes training for journalistic and technical teams, distance and on-site coaching by Ségolène Malterre from France 24 (Pas2Quartier) and Inoussa Maïga from Agribusiness TV, as well as financial support to assist the teams to produce programmes. All with a single objective: to produce and distribute programmes with and for the youth of the Sahel region.
