New training on the production of talk shows in the Sahel

This year, from March to June, 108 journalists and media professionals were taught techniques to help them produce public talk shows in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

The presentation of talk shows represents the fourth and final pillar of the training offered through the MediaSahel project, following on from training that covered the basics of journalism, radio interactivity, and gender- and conflict-sensitive journalism. This new module aims to promote the development of this genre of programming within the project’s partner radio stations in order to get young listeners more interested and more involved.

“I am happy with this training”, says R. Ouédraogo, a presenter at the RTB2 radio station in Fada N’Gourma.  “Although our programme schedules do feature talk shows, they don’t always meet the presentation and production standards displayed by public talk show formats. More often than not, we produce them at the behest of our partners. Thanks to this session, we have discovered some tricks to produce these formats. [...] We need teamwork to do this properly. There are many stakeholders involved at the production stage and they must each fully play their part in order to produce a good show. Once we head back to our local communities, we promise to share what we have learned with our peers and to start producing this genre of programming.”
