In memory of Christophe Deloire: A tribute to his commitment to freedom of the press

At the helm of the NGO since 2012, Christophe Deloire was a man of conviction committed to freedom of the press, as well as a long-standing partner and friend of CFI. We were saddened to learn of his death on 8 June 2024, at the age of 53. On behalf of all the CFI staff, we would like to offer our condolences to his family and to the entire Reporters Without Borders team.

Since 2012, when he became Secretary General of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Reporters Without Borders, Christophe Deloire had been engaged in a battle similar to that of CFI: that of defending freedom of the press and the safety of journalists throughout the world, wherever the need arose. His support for media affected by wars, abductions, censorship and authoritarianism was unfailing and deserving of the utmost respect.

We recall working together on major projects such as the Syrian Media Incubator in 2015, which enabled several media outlets to disseminate quality information in Syria, and more recently, on the Voices in Exile project, which will enable many journalists and media in exile to receive support and guidance from Paris.

We shared the same commitment to a free and independent press around the world. CFI joins France Médias Monde in paying tribute to the loss of this great man and our thoughts go out to his family and friends, as well as to the Reporters Without Borders team.

I would like to thank Christophe Deloire for having been, throughout all these years and despite all the difficulties, a man of conviction. His persistence in fighting for freedom of the press worldwide and his battle against the violence suffered by journalists command respect. My thoughts go out to his family and the Reporters Without Borders team. Today, the media world lost an unforgettable man.
Thierry Vallat,
Chairman and Managing Director of CFI
