RadioCheck Togo
Goals
Presentation
In the north of Togo, the army is fighting jihadist groups that are threatening to destabilise the Savanes, Kara and Centrale regions. This insecurity has led the authorities to restrict access to information, particularly about military operations. The information vacuum created by this situation encourages the manipulation of information. This has an impact on the local radio stations in these three regions, which are seeking to combat disinformation and maintain social stability. However, these radio stations, which can themselves be vectors for false information due to a lack of resources, vigilance or methods, have much to offer: they are very familiar with the social fabric of the communities established in the areas they serve and speak to them in their mother tongues.
In response to this situation, CFI, in partnership with Coaweb and funded by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, has launched the RadioCheck Togo project. This 24-month project aims to set up collaborations between Coaweb and local radio stations by supporting TogoCheck in the production of audio and video content, and training 12 local radio stations to adapt this content into local languages. The project will also deliver a capacity-building programme that improves broadcasting equipment, the production of dedicated programmes and the development of digital media. Finally, a feedback workshop will bring together radio stations and authorities for a constructive dialogue on access to information in northern Togo.
