Introducing young people from the Balkans to the basics of online journalism

14 young men and women, all bloggers, podcasters or influencers from various online media in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia, gathered for a training session that ran from 6 to 8 October 2021.

The aim of this workshop, organised online in cooperation with Mediacentar Sarajevo and the Albanian Media Institute, was to provide participants with the necessary skills to engage and influence their community on key subjects such as the environment, gender issues and even the specific problems facing young people in this region.

The first part of this workshop focused on the dynamics of the market, the variety of marketing strategies and understanding the public and the competition. The young journalists also discussed the different digital formats and the best way of distributing their content on various platforms.

Creating content with high social responsibility

The basic principles of journalism and ethics in the profession were also addressed, a key point for these young people, who can create content with a high level of social responsibility. In this context, the attendees discussed how these principles can be applied to their work. Particular attention was also given to digital security.

Some of these participants will be heading to Paris to take part in an incubation week which will give them the opportunity to discover initiatives in the field of online media in France and learn about using social media to achieve social, environmental or cultural goals. It will also be a chance for them to get to know each other (better) and share their work and practices.
