Explaining economic development through data journalism

Supported by Phandeeyar, a partner in the Mekong: Sustainable News project, the business editor at The Myanmar Times, Thit Nay Moe, has recently published an article entitled 'Myanmar's economy - a kitten among tigers?', using data visualisation techniques.

At the end of August 2019, journalists from six Burmese media outlets, including The Myanmar Times, took part in a data management training course held in Yangon, Myanmar. Phandeeyar has offered more than 45 hours of one-to-one coaching to the journalists in these editorial teams, so that they can publish content that is more accessible to the public, while using data-journalism techniques.

Thit Nay Moe was one of those journalists. Even though he regularly covered business news, he had no experience in writing articles based on data before he attended the training course, which taught him how to collect, analyse and visualise data.

His article was published in the English and Burmese versions of The Myanmar Times in November 2019.
