Al Hurreya: the platform that values freedoms

Al Hurreya is a Moroccan website that helps citizens defend their individual rights and freedoms. Founded by a group of journalists in April 2019, Al Hurreya encourages young people to express themselves freely in their country.

Many of the topics covered by this collective encourage people to speak freely, to defend themselves and to protect their rights. Thanks to interactive content (videos, forums and the like), the team denounces certain acts such as stigmatisation and discrimination.

Even today, there are still some countries"...there is an urgent need to stop people from inciting acts of violence..." in the world where taboo subjects cannot be discussed in the traditional media, ostensibly on the grounds of protecting modesty and human values. The website therefore offers its users an online space for discussing their opinions on the clichés and stereotypes linked to minorities in the Maghreb region.

Al Hurriya places independence and freedom of choice of religious and sexual orientation as a top priority, denouncing all forms of hatred and hostility. For its team, there is an urgent need to stop people from inciting acts of violence.

The platform is available in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia and will be extended, in a second stage, to the wider Maghreb region, namely Libya and Mauritania.

Legitimate and sincere voices

Besides being a forum that ensures free speech and condemns malicious acts, Al Hurriya, – as part of its goal to increase the standing of every human being "... to increase the standing of every human being..." and guarantee the right to individual freedoms – keeps citizens aware of these issues and allows them to speak out about their past experiences. The platform also makes it easier for them to contact human rights organisations and associations that can help them.

Lastly, it plays an important role in the sexual education of young people – a subject that barely features in any of the school curricula taught in the Maghreb countries, but which is vital if they are to flourish and positively contribute to society.

Al Hurriya is one of the 18 projects that were selected and has been receiving support from D-Jil since 2018. What these ambitious and innovative projects have in common is a desire to do things differently and to open up new perspectives for young people in the Arab world through topics that affect and concern them.

Co-financed by the European Union and supported by CFI, in partnership with the Fondation Samir Kassir, FMAS, IREX Europe and Leaders of Tomorrow, D-JIL fosters active citizenship and autonomy in young people in nine Arab world countries, using online media as a vehicle.
