Revitalising and Enhancing Media in Sudan
Goals
Presentation
The Revitalising and Enhancing Media in Sudan (REM) project is funded by the European Union and implemented by Interviews Europe, in partnership with CFI and the GISA Group, over a period of 36 months.
Two main objectives:
- to better inform the Sudanese public, thereby facilitating better decision-making,
- to provide more effective support for peace-building and social cohesion initiatives in Sudan.
The project has a three-pronged approach:
1) to enhance the capacity of Sudanese radio and audiovisual media;
2) to improve the Sudanese public’s access to reliable, high-quality information;
3) to enhance the role of the media and other civil society actors in promoting social cohesion in Sudan.
CFI works to build the capacity of Sudanese community radio stations (in the areas of governance, editorial policy and content production), to train journalists and content creators in exile, and to support civil society organisations and human rights defenders in promoting social cohesion.
As part of this project, CFI also supports the Sudan Media Forum on governance issues and the production of its advocacy campaigns.
Project beneficiaries
- CFI is training 50 journalists and content creators in mobile journalism, social media and podcast production.
- CFI awards content production grants to 40 journalists and content creators to support the production of content on social media, through mobile journalism or a podcast project.
- Four independent Sudanese radio stations are receiving organisational, editorial and financial support.
- 20 civil society and human rights organisations are receiving financial support.
- CFI is supporting the Sudanese Media Forum in enhancing its governance and is providing it with a grant to fund the production of its advocacy campaigns.
Actions
Building the capacity of Sudanese independent journalists and media organisations
The project provides for structured support to four radio stations, both in Sudan and abroad, with a view to enhancing their internal organisation, governance and the quality of their content.
This support combines a group workshop, one-to-one mentoring over several months to help them finalise their editorial and financial plans, and technical support tailored to their needs. Editorial teams will also receive targeted support in the areas of radio production, public service broadcasting, audience engagement and the promotion of women’s voices.
The radio stations will be linked together to encourage the sharing of content and the adoption of common principles, and each will receive a grant to put the initiatives developed as part of the project into practice.
Improving the Sudanese public’s access to reliable and verified information
The primary aim of this component is to develop the skills of journalists and content creators in order to promote access to high-quality information. It includes training for at least 50 people in social media, mobile journalism and podcast production, as well as the awarding of production grants.
Enhancing the role of the media and civil society in promoting social cohesion
To support civil society and the media in promoting social cohesion and combating hate speech, a training programme on communication and advocacy will be rolled out for twenty civil society and human rights organisations, accompanied by collaborative grants for content production.
The governance of the Sudan Media Forum (SMF) will be enhanced, and a grant will enable it to scale up its advocacy strategy through the implementation of numerous campaigns.
