Support for Burmese media in exile: the Naye Thit project supports independent information
Related project
Naye ThitIn 2025, as Burma faces a major humanitarian crisis and intensifying armed conflict, the media in exile are playing a crucial role in maintaining an independent coverage of events.
The aim of the Naye Thit project is to strengthen these media by providing them with essential support in order to guarantee reliable and accessible information, despite a difficult environment.
As part of the project, five Burmese media outlets have been chosen to benefit from personalised support including financial assistance, training and individual monitoring. The first sessions took place in January and February 2025, covering key topics such as "Editorial strategy for media in exile" and "Drawing up a business plan".
These courses aim to provide journalists with the tools they need to navigate a complex environment while strengthening the editorial and financial management of the media.
The programme also includes personalised coaching over five months, with monthly sessions for each media outlet, to meet their specific needs. At the same time, another hybrid programme was launched to strengthen newsroom management and digital monetisation, offering three training sessions (face-to-face in Chiang Mai and online) to 15 members of the media and covering crucial topics such as optimising workflows, developing a digital strategy and drafting funding proposals.
Other support activities are also planned as part of Naye Thit, to help Burmese media in exile to continue to provide reliable and sustainable information, thereby helping to maintain a greater diversity of expression, despite the particularly difficult environment in Burma.
