Imane Belmehdi: I felt in my element

A student of Moroccan journalism, Imane Belmehdi received a MediaLab Campus scholarship to carry out an internship in a French media in March and April 2020, during the Covid-19 epidemic. She recounts her experience.

“I did a lot of research online to find an internship that suited me to benefit from the Medialab Campus scholarship. I applied to several offers on the web and I subsequently had three favorable responses from three media in France. I made the right choice to take the media specializing in the sports of Vélo Vert Magazine cycles located in the Paris region, which welcomed me with open arms. A superb experience that spanned 6 weeks, including 2 in writing and 4 in teleworking given the Co-vid 19 pandemic.

The Medialab Campus scholarship helped me a lot and frankly, I don't think I could have undertaken an internship in a foreign media with my own resources. During the first two weeks of the internship, before confinement, I had the opportunity to cover two events: Vélo in Paris fair (special cycles fair) as well as the opening of a special cycles store called En Selle Marcel in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris. My articles were published on the print magazine and the media website. I also learned new shooting techniques with the help of my editor, which allowed me to take photos that were also published and signed in my name.

I felt in my element during my internship. I also made reports on different themes, especially during the pandemic period when I had to work remotely. I dealt with different aspects of the health crisis and its impact on cycle shops in Paris. My editor-in-chief offered me a telephone subscription so that I could make my calls and collect statements on this subject. The fact of working on a subject which makes the world news in a foreign country was very beneficial to me.

The most memorable moment of my internship was when the confinement was launched, and all my colleagues told me that they were there for me if I ever needed anything. They all showed kindness and generosity by calling me to hear from me and by organizing aperitifs in videoconference every weekend. I felt less alone and supported. This has marked me forever. "
