Presentation
In October 2024, CFI launched a self-funded pilot project to support two independent media initiatives, Sabra (in Hebrew) and +972 Magazine (in English), run by Israeli journalists (Arabs and Jews) based in Haifa.
• Sabra is an online Palestinian magazine in Hebrew giving an Israeli readership direct intermediary-free contact with stories centred on Palestinian individuals – their identity, their humanity, preoccupations and social and cultural life. Sabra is a non-profit, non-partisan, independent magazine upholding values such as human rights, professional ethics and ethical journalism. This media outlet is supported by 7amleh (The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media), a non-profit organisation which defends Palestinians’ digital rights.
7amleh’s mission is to create a safe, fair and free digital arena for Palestinians. 7amleh studies and investigates issues in connection with Palestinians’ digital rights, offering possibilities to build capacity in terms of digital rights, digital activism and digital security for Palestinian activists and civil society, and handles local and international advocacy campaigns.
• 972-Advancement of Citizen Journalism was created in 2011 by Israeli and Palestinian journalists and bloggers. Since 2011, the organisation has edited the +972 Magazine website which publishes news and analysis in English.
+972 Magazine is the only English-language media outlet to provide trenchant investigations, analysis and new reports by Israeli and Palestinian journalists in the field. Since 2014, +972 has coedited the website in Hebrew Local Call ("Siẖa Mekomit"), in collaboration with Just Vision. Local Call offers hard-hitting investigative reports, incisive analysis and nuanced coverage of the events in Israel-Palestine. Both websites form a centre for uncompromising, binational, independent journalism, campaigning for justice and equality for all in Israel-Palestine.
+972 Magazine and Local Call are trustworthy sources for millions of readers who take an interest in the region. Many local and international media outlets take up articles from the websites, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR, The Guardian, BBC, Ha'aretz and Al Jazeera.
Promoting better representation of Palestinians in Israeli media and society, these media outlets are pushing back against hate speech and disinformation in Israel, in the Palestinian Territories and throughout the English-speaking world. CFI thus aims to support the creation of an arena for dialogue in Israeli society by facilitating access to well-balanced , top-quality news reports in both Hebrew and English.
