Innovate Africa: 3 hackathons in October (Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria)

Following on from those held in Abidjan, Dakar, Antananarivo and Douala, CFI and Code for Africa are organising three new 'media innovation marathons': on 2–4 October 2015 in Tunis, 9–11 October 2015 in Casablanca and 15–17 October 2015 in Algiers.

The aim of these hackathons is to encourage the creation and development of innovative information products and services in line with changing technologies and usages (in particular mobile usages), which are able to meet the expectations of the people of Africa.

During these gatherings, teams made up of journalists, web developers, graphic artists and designers face off in a friendly competition with a view to producing, over the course of a weekend, a prototype digital information product or service (e.g. websites, connected objects and applications). A few simple rules have been drawn up to ensure that all teams are given the same opportunity to present and defend their ideas and to enable the panel to pick the prize-winner(s) in a fair, conclusive way.

This series of hackathons accompanies the launch of the Innovate Africa competition, which following an initial continent-wide selection procedure will provide around forty project leads with the opportunity to take part in a fast-track training programme led by international mentors. After a final selection phase, the most promising projects will receive funding.

In a rapidly advancing environment, CFI has chosen to support social media stakeholders and also the traditional media in the switchover to digital, content creators, and developers by helping raise their professional standards and grouping them together under a federation.
