The French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs signs new performance contract with CFI

On Friday 8 October, Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Thierry Vallat, Chairman and Managing Director of CFI, signed an ambitious performance contract for three years (2021-2023) in the presence of Marie-Christine Saragosse, CEO of France Médias Monde.

Since 2009, CFI has been supporting the development of the media in the countries of the South, in particular in sub-Saharan Africa, the Mediterranean and the Levant. A subsidiary of the France Médias Monde group (RFI, France24, Monte Carlo Doualiya) and an agency of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, CFI enhances the capabilities of the media and contributes to development policies in accordance with the objectives of the Interministerial Committee for International Cooperation and Development (CICID) and the Law of 4 August 2021 on Programming for Solidarity Development and the Fight against Global Inequality.

The performance contract signed on Friday 8 October 2021 in Montpellier on the occasion of the Africa-France Summit sets out CFI’s objectives, which include combating disinformation, protecting the environment, promoting human rights, and fostering gender equality.

Promoting the development of the media, by the media

The 40 projects undertaken by CFI this year have the following aims:

- to encourage the media to involve the public more in public debate, in particular young people and women and especially in countries in crisis or emerging from a crisis;

- to enhance the professional skills of the media, particularly when it comes to combating wilfully false information and/or considering development issues (in particular environmental protection and the promotion of gender equality) and migration phenomena.

CFI’s activity each year:

  • • 6,000 media professionals trained
  • • 800 missions carried out in the field or remotely, 43% of which relate to young people
  • • €13,250,000 invested in training/support
